Radiology Technician Degree Options near Holly Ridge NC

Holly Ridge NC x-ray tech school internship programThe standard prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Holly Ridge NC or their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in North Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many offer other alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Holly Ridge area employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options in and around Holly Ridge NC to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

Holly Ridge NC student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in Holly Ridge NC hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Holly Ridge home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than conventional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Holly Ridge NC. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Holly Ridge NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the radiology technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Holly Ridge NC medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in Holly Ridge NC in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Holly Ridge NC home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Holly Ridge NC schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Holly Ridge NC area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
