Radiology Tech Degrees Offered near Ebensburg PA

Ebensburg PA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to consider is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Ebensburg PA or their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Pennsylvania or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many accept other alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Ebensburg area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options in and around Ebensburg PA to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

Ebensburg PA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often carried out in Ebensburg PA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Ebensburg residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are generally less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and assessing x-ray technician colleges near Ebensburg PA. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Ebensburg PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the radiology tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Ebensburg PA healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in Ebensburg PA in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Ebensburg PA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Ebensburg PA colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the xray tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ebensburg PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Ebensburg, Pennsylvania

Ebensburg is a borough and the county seat of Cambria County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.[3] It is located 25 miles (40 km) west of Altoona and surrounded by Cambria Township. It is situated in the Allegheny Mountains at about 2,140 feet (650 m) above sea level. Ebensburg is located in a rich bituminous coal region. In the past, sawmills, tanneries, wool mills, and a foundry operated there. The number of residents in 1900 was 1,574, and in 1910, 1,978. The population was 3,351 at the 2010 census.[4] It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Ebensburg originated in November 1796, when Congregational minister Rhees Lloyd led a small party of 20 Welsh people from Philadelphia to the lands Morgan John Rhees had chosen for his colony. They selected an attractive spot in the tops of the Allegheny Mountains and there settled what would become Ebensburg, naming it for Eben Lloyd, who died in childhood.[5] Lloyd offered land to the government in exchange for Ebensburg becoming the county seat, which the government accepted.

During the Civil War, men from Ebensburg served in the 133rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (particularly companies A, B and F)[6] and fought in Allabach’s brigade (Humphreys' 3rd Division) at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. In the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, the 133rd participated in the final charge on Marye’s Heights, suffering heavy losses.[7]
