Radiology Technician Degrees Available near Oakmont PA

Oakmont PA x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Oakmont PA or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Pennsylvania or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several approve other alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Oakmont area employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options in and around Oakmont PA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

Oakmont PA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in Oakmont PA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Oakmont residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and assessing x-ray tech schools near Oakmont PA. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Oakmont PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the radiology tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Oakmont PA health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in Oakmont PA in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Oakmont PA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Oakmont PA colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the xray tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Oakmont PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Oakmont, Pennsylvania

Incorporated as a town in 1889, this Allegheny River community began in 1816 when a farmer, Michael Bright, bought a large tract of land 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. The settlement took its name from a landmark tree, as the deed description reads, "Beginning at a black oak on the bank of the Allegheny River ..." The borough is best known for the nearby Oakmont Country Club, a premier golf course which has been the site of numerous U.S. Open golf tournaments, including the 2016 U.S. Open.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2), of which 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), or 8.99%, is water. The business district of town is on relatively flat land near the Allegheny River, but the main residential area is on the upward slope headed toward Oakmont Country Club and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Plum Creek flows through the borough.[5]

Oakmont has three land borders, including Plum to the east, and Penn Hills and Verona to the south. Across the Allegheny River to the west and northwest, Oakmont runs adjacent with O'Hara Township to the west and Harmar Township to the north (via the Hulton Bridge).
