Merkel TX x-ray tech school internship programThe basic prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in Merkel TX or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Merkel area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options in and around Merkel TX to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

Merkel TX student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically performed in Merkel TX family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Merkel residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating x-ray tech colleges near Merkel TX. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Merkel TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the radiology tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Merkel TX health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in Merkel TX in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Merkel TX home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Merkel TX schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Merkel TX area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
