An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Pflugerville TX or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Texas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Pflugerville area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options in and around Pflugerville TX to become certified. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

Pflugerville TX student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in Pflugerville TX family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Pflugerville residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally cheaper than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Pflugerville TX. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Pflugerville TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the xray tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Pflugerville TX medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in Pflugerville TX in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Pflugerville TX home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Pflugerville TX schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pflugerville TX area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
