But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

When you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Galax VA. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Galax VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the radiology tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Galax VA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in Galax VA in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Galax VA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Galax VA schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the xray tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Galax VA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Galax, Virginia

The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Galax with neighboring Carroll County for statistical purposes. Galax is bounded to the northeast by Carroll County and to the southwest by Grayson County.

The area that later became Galax was part of an 800-acre (320 ha) land grant given to James Buchanan in 1756 by the English Crown. The first plat map for Galax is dated December 1903;[7] The town founders selected the site for the city on a wide expanse of meadowland bisected by Chestnut Creek and sitting at an altitude of 2,500 feet on a plateau.[8] The Virginia General Assembly officially chartered the town of Galax in 1906.[9]

The town is named for Galax urceolata, an evergreen groundcover plant found throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. At the time, the plant was gathered and sold by many people in southwestern Virginia and northwestern North Carolina as an ornamental plant; a Norfolk and Western Railway Company official suggested that the town be named for the plant.[9] The first Galax Agricultural Fair took place in September 1908, when Galax had 600 residents.[10]
