You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous New Market VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the xray tech programs you are assessing have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the New Market VA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in New Market VA in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their New Market VA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the New Market VA schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the New Market VA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry.
