Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in East Troy WI or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Wisconsin or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many East Troy area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options in and around East Troy WI to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

East Troy WI student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually performed in East Troy WI hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your East Troy home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just confirm that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing x-ray technician schools near East Troy WI. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of East Troy WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the xray technician programs you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the East Troy WI health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in East Troy WI in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their East Troy WI home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the East Troy WI colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the East Troy WI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
