Marinette WI x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech program is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in Marinette WI or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Wisconsin or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Marinette area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options in and around Marinette WI to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

Marinette WI student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in Marinette WI family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Marinette home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

When you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray tech colleges near Marinette WI. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable also. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Marinette WI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the xray technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Marinette WI healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in Marinette WI in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Marinette WI residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Marinette WI colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the xray tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Marinette WI area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Marinette, Wisconsin

Marinette is a city in and the county seat of Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States.[6] It is located on the south bank of the Menominee River, at its mouth at Green Bay, part of Lake Michigan; to the north is Stephenson Island (Wisconsin), part of the city preserved as park.[7] During the lumbering boom of the late 19th century, Marinette became the tenth-largest city in Wisconsin in 1900, with its peak population of 16,195.

Marinette is the principal city of the Marinette, Wisconsin–Michigan Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Marinette County, Wisconsin and Menominee County, Michigan. The population was 10,968 at the 2010 census. Menominee, Michigan is across the river to the north, and the cities are connected by three bridges. Menominee and Marinette are sometimes described as "twin cities" of the Menominee River.

The town and county were named Marinette after Marie Antoinette Chevalier (1793, Langlade County, Wisconsin – 1865, Green Bay, Wisconsin),[8][9][10] an influential Métis woman who ran a trading post near the mouth of the Menominee River. Of Menominee and French Canadian ancestry, she came to be known as "Queen Marinette."[11] Her father was Bertrand Chevalier, a British trader of French Canadian ancestry, who was involved with an early trading post at Green Bay. Her mother was Lucy, the daughter of Menominee chief, Wauba-Shish (Great Marten).
