Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Silver Lake WI or their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Wisconsin or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many accept other options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Silver Lake area employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options in and around Silver Lake WI to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

Silver Lake WI student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually carried out in Silver Lake WI family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Silver Lake home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Silver Lake WI. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Silver Lake WI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the xray tech schools you are evaluating have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Silver Lake WI medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in Silver Lake WI in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Silver Lake WI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Silver Lake WI colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the xray tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Silver Lake WI area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
