Radiology Tech Degrees Offered near Hamptonville NC

Hamptonville NC x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for attending a radiology tech college is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Hamptonville NC or their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in North Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Hamptonville area employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options in and around Hamptonville NC to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees

Hamptonville NC student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often provided in Hamptonville NC family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Hamptonville residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of locating and assessing x-ray tech schools near Hamptonville NC. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? Most xray technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hamptonville NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the xray technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Hamptonville NC medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in Hamptonville NC in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Hamptonville NC residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Hamptonville NC colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hamptonville NC area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
